City striker out for a month

Steve Thompson came off at half time yesterday in the 1-2 win over Sunderland and requires an operation on an achilles problem.

Whilst not too serious, Thommo will require time to recover from the minor operation and looks set to miss tript to Colchester and Sheffield Wednesday as well as home games against QPR and high-flying Burnley.

Thomspson has been in excellent form this season despite scoring just 3 goals. It is his partnership with Chopra however that works so well and is at the heart of City’s best play. Thompson wins more than his share in the air and his communication and understanding with Chopra is brilliant to watch. One particular example is the second goal against Derby whereby a superb Thompson lay-off set up Chopra to finish neatly.

Kevin Campbell is the likely man to replace him but Campbell has made little impression so far at Cardiff and certainly does not look a 90 minute player. A striker may be a priority for Jones in the January transfer window and he may look at bringing in a loan player as cover. When Campbell tires during games, Luigi Glombard may be the one to replace him but his style is similar to Chopra’s and City would be lacking in high and strength up front.
