Cardiff’s Whitts: ‘Too Laid Back’?

Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham made a comeback to the starting XI on Saturday and turned in a good performance as Cardiff saw off Colchester with an emphatic 4-1 victory.

Whittingham was lively and displayed the sort of form we know he can be capable of, and gave us the cutting edge we have missed. His goal was courtesy of a deflection, but the former Aston Villa winger also weighed in with two assists and was instrumental in the best goal of the game after creating space with a dummy and crossing for Hasselbaink to side-foot home.

Now Whittingham hopes to push on from here and mature from the ‘bench role’ he has occupied for much of his time at Ninian Park. Whitts told the Western Mail:

“I haven`t been starting that many games or doing myself justice when I`ve been coming on off the bench.”

“The gaffer has told me what I needed to be doing more and I have just been trying to take on board what he says, to bring it into my game.”

“To a certain extent perhaps it is a case of me being a little bit too laid-back. It looks as if I`m not bothered when things go wrong but that is simply not the case.”

“I really am looking to start again from here. I feel good now and really want to kick on.”

Whittingham’s recall comes after regular left midfielder Joe Ledley, one of our most consistent performers, was moved into a more central role at the expense of Gavin Rae. Whittingham and Parry on the flanks can certainly deliver the creativity and crosses we need to improve and Whittingham seems keen on taking his chance, he’s waited patiently and now, hopefully, we will see him realise his full potential.

his impact from the bench is normally when we’re struggling. Good shots against Leicester and Charlton and he’s always good for a goal – he and Parry will scare a few defences
