Cardiff’s Thompson to return

Cardiff City striker Steve Thompson is back in full training after undergoing treatment for an Achilles injury. It was thought the Scottish International would need surgery on the problem but the medical team instead used 3 intense bursts of treatment rather than risk invasive surgery and Thompson has made an excellent recovery.

Kevin Campbell has deputised and Roger Johnson even came on as an emergency frontman against Burnley but Thompson’s presence and work rate have been missed. The club’s ambitious bid to bring in Alan Smith on loan failed but with Thompson’s impressive recovery he is set to go straight into the squad for Friday night’s televised encounter with Queens Park Rangers.

With Cardiff’s squad already threadbare, the last thing City would want to do is to play Thompson before he is ready and risk seeing him sidelined for a longer period so he may be restricted to the subs bench should he pass a fitness test.

Campbell made little impression in Thommo’s absence despite battling hard while Andrea Ferretti is currently injured and Luigi Glombard out-of-favour and similar in style to Michael Chopra.

Welcome back Thommo!
