Cardiff’s McPhail: ‘Mean Machine’?

Cardiff City midfielder Stephen McPhail features highly on the Championship players with poor discipline!

The 5’8′ midfielder is not the architypal dirty player, in fact, his role seems to be the passing game while Gavin Rae or Riccy Scimeca applies the added grit in the ‘enforcer’ role.

However, it is the fiery Irishman who leads the Cardiff City discipline charts with 18 fouls so far in the season. He has picked up only one yellow card so far (Glenn Loovens has 3) but in terms of niggly fouls – McPhail leads the way.

He doesn’t seem afraid to get stuck in but you certainly dont notice him for the physical presence. Other players on the list are far more predictable with the bullish Barry Hayles (22), ‘Elbows’ Adebola (15), the Vinnie jones of Scunthorpe Utd Jim Goodwin (21) and the battering ram James Scowcroft way out in front on (29).

Who would have expected slight little Stevie McPhail, the passing genius, to feature in there? Well he does, and its no bad thing as far as I’m concerned. We have lacked some bite in recent seasons, and whilst our aim is fast, free-flowing football, we have been guilty of being too nice.

Although Stephen, some shooting practise in training mightn’t go amiss……

McPhail simply cant time his tackles! Not just him getting stuck in, more that he tries – but cant tackle…
