Cardiff’s Gunter Calls On Experience

Cardiff City’s promising young right-back Chris Gunter has admitted his form in recent games has not been as he would like, but believes he is now right back on song after a good perfromance against Plymouth Argyle.

Gunter was called into early action this season after an injury to regular right-back Kevin McNaughton. He won rave reviews for his appearances last season sparking Premiership interest over the summer and winning his first senior Wales cap.

A poor back-pass against Norwich caused problems for his keeper Ross Turnball and the on-loan goalie’s subsequent blunder saw Simon Lappin fire into an empty net from 40 yards.

However, Gunter returned smoothly to form with a gutsy and solid performance against Plymouth Argyle and looked back to his former, confident self. A great game for the Wales U21s (playing at centre-back) boosted his confidence as well as valuable advice and input from the Cardiff coaching staff and senior pros. Cardiff have the likes of Hasselbaink, Fowler, Sinclair with valuable experience to offer.

Gunter told the SW Echo:

‘It`s all confidence and after my mistake at Norwich which led to the goal things were a bit difficult, but the coaching staff and players got behind me.’

‘I admit I was not up to scratch early on in the season, but at Plymouth I seemed to express myself a little more. I now need to kick on and rediscover my form of last season and try to hold down a place in the side.’

Gunter is by no means guaranteed to start tomorrow’s game against Charlton Athletic after the return to fitness of Scottish full-back Kevin McNaughton. The former Aberdeen defender was switched to centre-back for his return, but will be displaces if Loovens recovers from a foot injury in time – meaning that Gunter or McNaughton would take Darcy Blake’s place on the Bluebirds’ bench.
