Cardiff: Too many widemen ???

With the recent acquisition of former Aston Villa starlet Peter Whittingham, Cardiff City now face up to a scenario unthought of earlier in the season but now causing more concern: Do we have too many wingers and not enough in the centre?

In central midfield we have Stephen McPhail and Riccy Scimeca. Two good players, integral to our success. On the wings we have:

Ledley (left)
Parry (either)
Whittingham (left)
Flood (either)
Kamara (right)
Cooper (right)

whilst forward Luigi Glombard looked more dangerous on the wing when used as a substitute against Ipswich in December. Thats two left wingers, two right wingers and two to cover either position. Darcy Blake has also played wide right for the Bluebirds this season. Curtis McDonald is a highly rated youngster who also plays on the flank.

OK, so Joe Ledley and Willo Flood are both able to play in central midfield when required, but thats not ideal for either player. That leaves us with no like-for-like replacement in central midfield and although we have a small squad, the main problem is that the back-up players we do have, are not up to the job. Can you see Kevin Cooper starting another match for Cardiff City?

Surely Dave Jones has a central midfielder lined up, or, is he prepared to wlecome the banished Jeff Whitley back into the fold? Whitley returned from a loan at Stoke, but strong rumours linking him to Millwall and Plymouth failed to substantiate and Whitley remains a Bluebird.

Possible moves for Cooper and Kamara (loan) may free the way to bring in some added creativity into the middle.

cardiff have a quality team, and we need good wing men because steve thompson is 6″4 i think .. so a good few wing men with good croses will keep the defenders on thompson and leave chops or macca open for the shot
