Cardiff swoop for Villa starlet

Peter Whittingham is in Cardiff today and is widely expected to sign for the Bluebirds in a deal worth between £300-350k with terms agreed and only a medical remaining.

The left-sided player is primarily a midfielder known for having a wicked cross but can also play at left back. City have been tracking Whittingham for some time and made enquiries over the summer for the player but with Aston Villa’s capture of Philip Bardsley on loan from Manchester United, an improved offer from City was enough to tempt Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill to let him go.

Other clubs were said to be interested in the player but Cardiff got their man, thought to be one Dave Jones top targets for the transfer window. He will go into the squad for this weekend’s game with Southend but will have to make do with a place on the bench with Jones reluctant to change his team after good recent performances.

The 22 year old made over 50 Premiership appearances for Villa, including 4 this season, scoring one goal. He also had recent loan spells with Burnley and Derby.
