Cardiff City striker Steve MacLean is close to a move to Plymouth Argyle, just months after arriving at Ninian Park.

The move would see MacLean link up with former manager Paul Sturrock, new at Home Park and who desperately needs striking options.

MacLean arrived in Cardiff with a good reputation and played well in pre-season. However, he has failed to impress in the first team and an untimely injury saw him sidelined at a crucial point.

MacLean is not included in the travelling squad for tomorrow’s match with WBA, he is in Devon discussing personal terms ahead of the move, for which a small fee is thought to be involved.

MacLean’s departure looks likely to mean a stay for transfer listed striker Steve Thompson, while The Bluebirds are still searching for a suitable loan player to cover Robbie Fowler’s expected lay-off.

Thompson and Hasselbaink are the only remaining out-and-out strikers. Parry can do a job, while Matt Green is young and inexperienced.
