Cardiff City’s teenage defender Chris Gunter has revealed his suprise after being named in John Toshack’s latest Welsh squad. Toshack joins the list of admirers of the right-back after club manager Dave Jones praised him and likened the player to Wales’ other prodigy Gareth Bale.

Gunter broke into the Cardiff City first team this season, at the tender age of 17 and has impressed. He ousted on-loan Arsenal full-back Kerrea Gilbert and has proved up to the challenge and has earned his International call-up following a series of consistent and energetic performances.

Gunter, who won apprentice of the year at the football league awards, has not let the hype go to his head and still clean Stephen McPhail’s boots. Gunter spoke to the South Wales Echo following his call-up:

‘I’m absolutely staggered, I can’t believe this,’

‘It just caps an unbelievable season for me. I’m just so excited at the prospect of possibly playing for my country.’

‘But for the time being all I’m focusing on is Cardiff’s match at Ipswich on Sunday.’

Congratulations to Chris Gunter, hopefully the experience will help his development and we look forward to seeing him in action again next year.

All a bit much for a player who hasnt really does that much. Sure he has potential, but the hype is only going to pressure him
