Cardiff Star Signs Bumper New Deal

Cardiff City’s prolific striker Michael Chopra will today complete the paperwork on a new contract which will work out well for both parties.

After Chopra passed the 20 goal mark during the 4-1 win over Preston North End, he was entitle to a new improved contract under the terms of his current deal. Talks between the club and the players agent are now over and Chopra will sign a much improved contract tying him in to the club until 2011.

The contract includes a special clause giving the club more flexibility to reject offers below that value, believed to be around the £5 million mark. That figure is a staggering fee for a player who cost Cardiff City less than half a million less than a year ago, representing over a 10-fold profit.

Chopra’s willingness to sign such a deal, indicated his commitment to the club after he was misinterpreted during a radio interview where it was suggester he would leave Cardiff City if they failed to gain promotion this year.


Cardiff City Chairman Peter Ridsdale was understandably delighted with Chopra’s decision to commit:

‘Irrespective of the clause in the contract, which would give us a lot of money if he did go, I’m hopeful that Michael sees out this contract and during that time he plays in the Premiership with Cardiff.’


‘I still expect that there will be interest in Michael in the summer, but that can only be good news because it shows that we have players other clubs want.’
