Cardiff City top scorer Michael Chopra has revealed he wants to quit Cardiff, if the Bluebirds do not reach the Premiership at this time of asking.

The talismanic striker left hometown club Newcastle United in the summer for a fee of around £500k. He has impressed in the Championship and currently leads the scoring charts with 18 goals, despite a mis-season blip in which Chopra looked short of confidence and lacked his goalscoring touch.

His threat comes at a ‘make or break’ time for City as they prepare to continue a good run and cement their place in the play-offs. They currently lie in 6th place and the automatic positions are still not beyond the Bluebirds, having led for a long period earlier in the season.

Speaking during an interview with the BBC, Chopra revealed:

‘My main aim this season is to get promoted with Cardiff and hopefully I can.’

‘But if I don’t get promoted with Cardiff, hopefully I can be in the Premiership next season with someone else.’

Chopra has had his critics and failed to make much impression so far in the Premiership. He was idolised on Tyneside and many felt that he wasnt given enough time to shine. After just one season outside the Premiership, Chopra is anxious to return:

‘Once you’ve had a taste of Premiership football you don’t really want to lose it,’

‘But I made my mind up I wanted first-team football and needed to play week in week out.’

If Cardiff do lose Chopra in the summer, they can expect a decent return on the half a million they shelled out on the striker. They will be under little financial pressure to sell and Chopra would still have a long time on his contract leaving Cardiff in a good position to negotiate a fee for one of the top scorers in the Championship, also with time on his side.

Although a little dissappointing, Chopra is an ambitious character and has certainly put in 100% in every performance this season. Hopefully his goals can fire Cardiff City to the Premiership and the Ninian Park hero will get longer to fall in love with the Cardiff fans, as they have with him.
