After an up-and-down season, Cardiff City finished comfortably mid-table. A scintillating start was followed by a dismal end and the same players looked half as effective as previously.

VitalCardiff brings you an end of season review of each player. If you disagree then feel free to leave a comment at the foot of this article or e-mail Vital Bluebirds with an alternative review!!

The reviews will be published every weekday between 10-11am:

27 JASON BYRNE

Cardiff City signed Byrne from Eircom league side Shelbourne where he was prolific over the last few seasons. He was purchased as somewhat of a gamble and brought in to score goals and tke some responsibility from Michael Chopra.

Cardiff were on a dismal run when Byrne made his debut against Wolves. Byrne came on as a second half substitute and scored a late winner with a good finish from inside the box. There were no Cardiff fans allowed after being banned by Jez Moxey but it was a welcome relief to Cardiff and Byrne looked to have made an immediate impact.

However, since that goal – Byrne has not scored and not been particularly threatening. He has looked an intelligent player, but has not found the pace of the game and struggled to build a partnership with either Thompson or Chopra up front.

Byrne was injured at the end of the season and missed the run-in, he has not yet had his chance with Cardiff City but will find first team action hard to come by next season and will need to grab any chances with both hands.

He will undoubtedly benefit from a full pre-season and get used to the Bluebirds style of play. Interest from Ireland arose during the summer but he remains a part of Cardiff`s future – for now at least.

Am a Shelbourne fan and just want to say that this lad is a very good player. For four seasons in a row he scored 20+ goals a season and out scored Kevin Doyle and Shane Long every season who are both established Pemiership players! He may go missing during the game but will always get a goal. Give him a chance
