Cardiff City last night set up a clash with the most local of the local rivals Newport County, as they beat Welshpool Town 1-0 at Maesydre.

Kevin Cooper rolled back the years to produce an effective midfield performance, although this may be his last action for the Bluebirds after barely featuring for two years.

‘Pool had two goals disallowed after causing some problems in the Cardiff box but City were the more comfortable team although the tough conditions made it difficult to create real chances.

Cooper and youngster Jon Brown both went close with long range efforts for Cardiff but Darren Purse had to be strong in the Cardiff defence to keep out some resilietn Welshpool attacks.

As the game looked to be heading into extra time, Cardiff won it with a fine free-kick from young winger/striker Jon Brown while David Forde’s save moments later was equally as important.

Cardiff proceed into the semi-final and will play Newport County, a team packed with former Cardiff stars. Damon Searle, Lee Jarman, Jason Bowen amongst them. Carmarthen play TNS in the quarter final, the winner taking on Llanelli meaning that Cardiff should have a great opportunity for the title and prize money if they decide to go for it.

i think we know what to expect from Darren, he’s a top professional. It must be hard at the moment, but he just needs to stick it out.
