Cardiff Reaction to Saints Win

Dave Jones was clearly delgighted after Steve Thompson’s powerful left-footed strike handed Cardiff all 3 points last night. Jones claimed this was Cardiff’s best victory to date, most likely in terms of satisfaction and is showed that when unable to play their football as quickly and with time – City can still grind out the results they need.

Dave Jones:

‘They were digging trenches all over the place but like any George Burley side they still came at us and Neil Alexander had to make a couple of top class saves to keep them out.But we kept it tight, maintained our concentration and kept believing in what we’re doing – we have to do that because people know what we are about now.


Of his goalscorer Dave was just as complimentary:

‘If anyone out there deserved the goal it was Steven Thompson. I was ready to accept a hard-earned point until Steve got the goal he deserved for a top performance.’



Southampton boss George Burley was disappointed not to get a point from the game and was satisfied with his temas performance:

‘I was very pleased with the way we played, it was a travesty we didn’t get anything. I couldn’t have asked for more – my players showed great commitment and if we keep playing like that we’ll win more than we lose and will be OK.



Cardiff dieplayed last night some of the adaptability that will be needed to stay at the top of the table, with a small squad we don’t currently have to options to turn elsewhere if, say, Stephen McPhail were to find his passing game hindered by soggy, heavy pitches. On this performnace though, Cardiff showed that they can adapt to different styles and tactics and win against a very good side.
Although Jones will not let his players lose focus or get carried away, he was evidently pleased with the way his players reacted and stuck at their task.
