Ahead of the weekend draw with Fulham – who are pushing for the play-offs – Neil Warnock had a contract extension at Cardiff confirmed. This will take him into next season with bigger and better things targeted.

Had Warnock managed to guide Cardiff to another victory at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday an unlikely challenge for promotion could have been possible this season. However, the reality is the Bluebirds had far too much to do to achieve this anyway.

Warnock’s all but achieved his prime objective of keeping Cardiff in the Championship – taking us from second bottom when he arrived – with the boss now planning a promotion bid next season.

In order to do this he’ll be looking to add to the squad. Warnock also revealed some players are playing for their futures at the moment. He was quoted by the BBC as saying.

‘I’ve been planning for weeks. We’ve got opportunities now to pit our wits against a lot of good teams between now and the end of the season, and I want to see how we react now. I’m still looking at one or two players – can I get better than them or not? Certain players are playing for their places at the minute. That’s how it should be.’

No club has a better points return in 2017 so far than Cardiff but the 12 points between us and Sheffield Wednesday – who hold the final play-off spot – is too much to make up this season. Continued momentum to see out the season will be the aim though.

Warnock is looking for Vincent Tan to back him but has warned the Bluebirds’ owner that as much as promotion is his aim for next season it can’t be assured as it isn’t as easy as saying you’ll get promoted and then achieving it.

‘We talked about a budget for the summer and the FFP [Financial Fair Play regulations] which I’ve got to help contribute to, which I’ve told them I can do certain amounts to help out. Together we thought, if we all do our jobs right, it will give us a chance. You can’t say you’re going to get promotion – all you can say is we’ll have a good try at having a good season.’
