Cardiff City travelled to Layer Road yesterday with home side Colchester United in wretched form, fottom of the table and without so much as a point in 5 games.

Traditionally, this type of fixture, and these opponents cause problems for Cardiff City – but optimism rose when Paul Parry’s excellent stike gave City an early lead.

However, the rest of the game saw Colchester showing far more flair and form than their position suggests. They were determined, energetic and positive – playing to their strengths and causing plenty of problems.

Hasselbaink’s sending off was a clear turning point, and the extra space was crucial in the equalising goal. However, the U’s had shown enough potential and dedication and probably deserved something from the game.

A draw was probably not enough for Colchester but they did stop the rot, typically it was against Cardiff City. Play-off aspirations have faded and with a 1-0 home defeat to strugglers Leicester and a 1-1 draw to the bottom side having lost 5 games in a row – its not difficult to see why.
