Cardiff City started unchanged from the win over Colchester United and took an early lead courtesy of a Steve Thompson beauty from 25 yards.

Burgess and Parker looked lively up-front for the home side and they had a fair amount of possession themselves although rarely tested Schmeichel too sternly.

Hasselbaink had a golden opportunity to extend the lead shortly before the break as he burst forward but Rachubka saved well with his feet.

The second half saw Cardiff living dangerously with Ben Burgess again causing problems as the home side pressed.

Hasselbaink had a good effort after a flowing Bluebirds move, a mishit clearance fell to the ex-Chelsea man and his shot from 12 yards was well blocked.

Cardiff and Steve Thompson were denied what looked like a clear penalty when Michael Jackson climbed all over the Scotsman – it was all Thommo could do to stand still but nothing was given.

City survived a nervy moment soon after when Gary Taylor-Fletcher hit the bar, and Kevin McNaughton did brilliantly to block the rebound.

A Gavin Rae burst down the right found McPhail whose thunderbolt was brilliantly saved low down but it was Blackpool who were the side going forwards with the Bluebirds restricted to counter-attacking.

4 minutes injry time were allowed and Cardiff looked to run down the clock but Joe Ledley went through one-on-one with the keeper, nutmegged him but agonisingly hit the post.

Nevertheless, City saw out the time to score a vital victory and the first in 39 years at Bloomfield Road.
