Cardiff City went out of the FAW Premiership Cup after losing on penalties to Newport County.

The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes despite Cardiff City fielding a strong XI. There were few clear chances for either side with a distinct lack of quality on show in the final third. Shots on target were rare and always tamely directed at the goalkeeper as the game drifted into extra time.

Newport County took the lead in extra time but Cardiff equalised through Steve Thompson to send the game into a penalty shoot-out.

Former Cardiff defender Lee Jarman scored the decisive penalty after a miss by City striker Steve Thompson and Newport County won the shoot-out 5-4 to go into the final and rack up a guaranteed 50k in prize money.

What a ludicrous and disgraceful performance – how much was earned this week by the City players and how much earned by the County players .. how many goals has Steve Thompson actually scored since he’s been here? Why on earth do so many fans sing with delight when he comes on only to simply clatter into opposing defences .. when will we actually deal with the fact that we haven’t got any goal-scoring forwards?
