Cardiff City’s Purse In Superb Form

Cardiff City captain Darren Purse spent a frustrating season on the bench last year after some defensive blunders and the emerging Johnson/Loovens partnership. However, Loovens’ departure handed Purse the opportunity to reclaim his position at the back.


It is fair to say that many supporters had come to doubt Purse’s credentials, we certatinly haven’t seen the best of him for some time. The own goal against Leicester City last season typified his recent form but he remains an experienced campaigner who provided good cover for our first choice duo.


Since coming back into the team, Purse and Johnson have suffered teething problems, as expected. A disappointing goal conceeded against Doncaster, followed by a disasterous final 10 minutes against Norwich City did little to allay fears that our defensive frailties would cost us this season.


However, Purse and Johnson are both proven quality performers and despite operating with Capaldi, McNaughton, Blake, Kennedy and Comminges all at different times – recent performances are hugely encouraging.


In fact, it’s been 300 minutes since our defence was last breached – in the league cup against MK Dons. That means that Sheffield United, Bristol City and Barnsley have all failed to score.


I thought Purse was immense against Bristol City. I can;t remember when, if ever, he put in such a dominant and impressive performance. Adebola looked a lost sheep, constantly beaten in the air and on the ground by Pursey.


Darren Purse is a popular member of the squad, if he can maintain his current form – things are looking exceptionally bright for the Bluebirds. At present, it’s a lack of goals hindering us.
