Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay may have to change his starting line-up from the first two Championship fixtures with new signing Jordon Mutch doubful ahead of the trip to face Bristol City.

Mutch was a surprise £2m signing from Birmingham City and has settled well despite missing several pre-season fixtures through injury. He was solid against Huddersfield Town before looking lively during the first half at Brighton. Unfortunately for Mutch and City, he took a heavy blow to the top of his foot and had to be replaced at half-time.

Speaking of Mutch’s chances, Malky Mackay told WalesOnline:

“He is having treatment and making progress and we will look at him again before making a decision, but he is certainly getting closer.”

If Mutch is ruled out or rested, Mackay has a plethora of options available to him. Filip Kiss is a like-for-like replacement, while Craig Conway, Joe Mason or new arrival Tommy Smith could feature on the right with Cowie playing even further infield. Another option would be Stephen McPhail, returning from a hamstring injury but the experienced Irishman is short on match sharpness and is unlikely to feature.
