Cardiff City Trial For ‘Ageing No-Hoper’

Cardiff City are thought to have handed a trial to former Liverpool, Wolves and Manchester City winger Mark Kennedy with a possibility of a permanent contract. Terms for the contract are close to aggrement but Kennedy would need to prove his fitness.

The 32 year old has left Crystal Palace, where he made 7 appearances last season, and has joined up with the Bluebirds for pre-season training. He was described as a ‘constant disappointment’ and ‘aging no-hoper’ to me by a Crystal Palace fan this morning.

Kennedy is a former colleague of Dave Jones, the pair having worked together with Wolves like Kevin Cooper and Michael Oakes.

If City make this signing permanent, many fans will be bitterly disappointed as the club continues to ‘scrape the barrel’ for veteran free transfers who do not improve the squad.

We already have Parry, Ledley, Whittingham who each play on the left wing, while the only natural right sided midfielder has just joined Dundee United on loan for the season (Willo Flood).

Kennedy can only be a short term ‘cover’ option surely and intended to bulk out the squad. However, he is in no way a replacement for the departed Aaron Ramsey and will do nothing to bring fans onside after the management hit out at expectation levels recently.

I’d reserve judgement on Sparky until he’s played. He may have lost some pace, but he hasn’t lost any of his skill

I’m not a regular on this site, usually use another CCFC forum but this story summizes EXACTLY how I feel about this signing. Though I hate to criticise the club or our players, this is very very disappointing.

I think he’s a decent player, if his fitness is good why the heck not? You could do far worse.

The issue here is the assurance of ‘big name signings’, backed up by a left winger (we have 3 better!), released by a rival club who didnt play last season and is 32 !

We need a striker! (And either a right-sided or central midfielder)

Kennedy is a very skillful player & an excellent passer of the ball. Although he has lost a bit of pace, still has a lot to offer. He has operated in central midfield before, and is capable of finding the illusive ‘killer through ball’. He can also score goals from outside the box. The big question would be whether he can still do it at the level that Cardiff are operating (top of the Championship), but 32 is no age & surely he’s worth having a look at? Dave Jones probably knows him well from his time at Wolves. It’s a bit harsh for the Palace fan to call Kennedy ‘an ageing no hoper’, i’d like to ask him what he has achieved in the game!
