Cardiff City Target Defensive Midfielders

Cardiff City are certainly in the market for a new midfielder and have courted a number of players since the end of last season. However, while none of our midfielders scored enough goals from that area last campaign – it seems Dave Jones may be targetting a more defensive minded player.

That would mean competition for Gavin Rae and Riccardo Scimeca with Stephen McPhail or Joe Ledley alongside such a player. With creativity and goals the problem – it is slightly strange that Jones is after a holding player.

There are 5 players attracting our attentions as central midfielders – 4 of which are defensive minded. Sammy Clingan of Norwich City has been strongly linked, while Nigel Quashie is another ball-winning battler.

Irishman Liam Miller, and Liverpool youngster Damien Plessis have also been strongly linked – the latter in a proposed loan move. Veteran German midfielder Dietmar Hamann has also been mentioned but this seems an incredibly long shot.

Of those mentioned, all are strong and scrappy players with the exception of Liam Miller who is a more classy, and creative player.

Jones may see the potential signing as adding more balance to the team, and may wish to get more from Steve McPhail than we have seen over the past 2 seasons. Many would rather see a replacement for the Irishman come in, especially with Joe Ledley looking likely to depart. Few Cardiff City fans would argue with 2 new midfield arrivals – any new signings now will have missed the pre-season tour and will take longer to settle.

If the futures of the likes of McCormack and Ledley need to be decided first – I just wish they’d get on with it !
