Cardiff City’s stand-in for much of this season was recently recalled to the International fold as new Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni named him in his first squad.

McPhail linked up with his fellow countrymen after City’s FA Cup final defeat to Portsmouth and made his return as a second half substitute in a win for Ireland.

McPhail played just over half an hour of the match, which ended in a 3-1 vicotry over Portuguese side Lagos yesterday. McPhail was a substitute for Reading’s Stephen Hunt while Glenn Whelan, Darren Potter and Andy Keogh got the goals, although it should have been a bigger win.

Currently Cardiff City have Enckelman, McNaughton, Capaldi, Ledley, Rae, McPhail and Parry involved with their national sides while Welsh youngsters Aaron Ramsey and Darcy Blake are both tipped to break into John Toshack’s side shortly.
