Cardiff City bosses Dave Jones and Peter Ridsdale wasted much of yesterday, transfer deadline day, chasing what turned out to be a lost cause in London.
Alexey Smertin, former Russian captain and Chelsea, Portsmouth and Fulham midfielder was seen to be the ideal candidate to solve our midfield injury problems. Jones and Ridsdale agreed a move with Roy Hodgson (which even saw Fulham pay a sizable chunk of his wages) but whilst Cardiff City representatives travelled to London to attend a work permit interview – Smertin had already decided not to move to South Wales.
It seems practically impossible that Smertin and his agent allowed the proposed move to continue that far if he was not keen so a late U-turn appears the more likely decision – again.
Missing out on Smertin is a blow, but it appears that every ‘plan B’ dreampt up by Jones/Ridsdale is a loan option – we still await names but once again we are told we are chasing ‘quality’.

thought we wouldn’t get anyone in as usual!
and we are also a striker down with thomo leaving which once again leaves us short of attacking options!
would Thommo have got a game though? Especially with Paul Parry also able to cover….
thomo going is not a problem, the real issue here is why cant we attract players to our club!! we are FA Cup Finalist, with an amazing new stadium and supposedly amazing training facilities, what more do they want!!!
would like to think its that Jones wont guarantee them a game as we have such a strong squad….
if we have a strong squad then why are we now struggling to get a team together at the beginning of the seeason?
i belive thomo still had something to offer howver DJ didn’t like him so probably for the best
we do have a strong squad – you cant really budget for 3 defensive midfielders (scimeca, Rae, Blake) and full-backs(Capaldi, McNaughton, Kennedy) all being out at the same time – no-one would sign if there were 4 people ahead of them in the position!
very true roath and when the squad is fit it is a strong squad
When are you going to spend the Ramsay money?
that money pays for the seasons wage budget as the club doesnt make enough from ticket sales/ merchandise/ sponsors
however the loovens money should be put aside for transfer budget probably january
pretty strong rumours going round that if DJ aint in the top 6, then he will be sacked, and the new manager will get all the money to spend on who he wants. and why cant we get someone on loan for 2 weeks or something until they fit again,
