Cardiff City’s versatile young player Darcy Blake celebrated his call-up to the Welsh squad with his first ever senior goal but ended on the losing side as Wales fell to Australia at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Goals from Tim Cahill and Robbir Kruse had put the Soccerroos 2-0 up before Blake got his head to a corner and steered the ball home to give Wales a chance.

Blake has never yet scored for Cardiff City, but has come close on a number of occasions – often choosing the big games to (nearly) break his duck. A goal was ruled out for offside during the 3-2 play-off final defeat to Blackpool, while a mazy run against Swansea City was thwarted only by the post as he danced through the Swans defence.

Primarily a defensive player, Blake has also operated in midfield and will be looking to add more of a goalscoring threat to his game. He is not a particularly tall player, but has a good leap. Hopefully the goal keeps him in Gary Speed’s plans for the future.
