Cardiff City Inquest Begins: Attack

Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd was abused all afternoon following his previous comments to the press. He must have been feeling pretty low when we went 2-0 down before he`d even touched the ball more than a few times. However, he scored a sublime goal (probably the best of the game) to bring us back and lift the Bluebirds spirits. That was important as it could`ve been a rout. Bothroyd expertly controlled Chris Burke`s diagonal ball, taking the pass in his stride and firing coolly past De Vries and into the corner.

Bothroyd also won a great deal of ball in the air, and tried to bring others into play. However, he was given little support and the Swans were first to every loose ball. Ross McCormack was the other striker, in for the suspended Michael Chopra and his third start of the season was far from happy. The Scotsman was deprived of any decent service and never once got behind the Swans back four. Rosco didn`t play badly, he just wasn`t involved very often due to our midfield vulnerability.

A rasping 25 yard free-kick could have put the Bluebirds ahead, but smacked into the crossbar while Ross also had City`s first effort when a speculative volley flew over. This was a day to forget for the Cardiff team and McCormack may well lose his place as Whittingham and Chopra return. Bothroyd`s goal was our bright spot and he was the best Cardiff City player on display in my opinion. Plenty more work needed in every area for Cardiff City.

.. one thing about Jay Bothroyd that’s rarely mentioned is that often he’s proved our best DEFENDER – his coming back to watch the near post at corners has been hugely important .. he’s nearly as reliable in defence as Gabor Gyepes is – or rather was ..
