Cardiff City Defender A Target For Ipswich Town ?

Cardiff City’s no nonsense defender Gabor Gyepes is potentially being lined up for a move to Roy Keane’s Ipswich Town with the Tractor Boys looking to replace outgoing personnel and cover a long term absence for former Cardiff City target Damien Delaney.

Gabor Gyepes is the man apparently in Keane’s sights and the Hungarian stopper has been told by Dave Jones he is freee to leave if his valuation is met, thought to be in the regbion of £500k. However, that deal would be dependent on the lifting of our transfer embargo which would allow for the return of Celtic’s Glenn Loovens on loan – a deal in principal is close between the clubs.

Gyepes is a solid Championship player, and remains a useful squad member. Many fans would see him above Mark Hudson in the order with Gerrard and Darcy Blake also viable options. However, Dave Jones remains loyal to Hudson and Gyepes looks likely to be the fall-guy.

Gyepes was a £200k buy from Northampton Town and has been effective if not outstanding. He was frustrated with his opportunities last season, though did manage to string a few games together due to injuries etc. In one such game he produced a remarkable rugby tackle to deny Leicester City striker James Vaughan – a cynical and bizarre lackle and he was rightly sent off (see here for details) – that led to a memorable rearguard action with fringe players Paul Quinn and Tony Capaldi inspirational in a crucial Bluebirds win.

If he’s not in Dave Jones’ plans, any significant bid must be considered and if it allows the lifting of the embargo it is doubly attractive. With Glenn Loovens back on board, for 1 season at least, we would not be weakened and a Loovens/Gerrard partnership at the heart of our defence is a very attractive proposition. It’s a bif IF, and we’re a long way from that point at present….
