Cardiff City Closing in on Marcus Bent

Cardiff City are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for Charlton Athletic striker Marcus Bent.

Several reports suggest that City have tabled a £2m bid for 30-year old Bent but Peter Ridsdale has denied that any offer has been made, though he did concede that Bent was one of several players under consideration.

Somewhat of a journeyman, Bent spent last season on loan at Wigan Athletic where he netted 7 in 31 appearances for the Latics including a hat-trick against Blackburn Rovers. Prior to that he had spells with Charlton Athletic and Everton after making his name with Ipswich Town.

Although not prolific, Bent is a powerful forward and caused problems in the Premier League last season. He also possesses pace and skill and would surely be a threat in the Championship. However, critics would point out his less impressive goal tally and question the rationale of spending £2m on a 30 year old.

Bent, Robbie Fowler and Ross McCormack may yet form the Bluebirds front-line next year but hopefully the £2m valuation is wide of the mark.
