Cardiff City will be looking for a new centre-back after a deal was finally agreed with Premiership new-boys Birmingham City for the transfer of Roger Johnson.

After a couple of months interest and rejected bids, a £5m deal has now been agreed with the Blues finally coming up with the £2m down patment Peter Ridsdale insisted on. Further payements of £1m will be scheduled while some of the £5m will depend on the Blues surviving in the Premiership.

Roger Johnson himself was keen on the move, and therefore it always seemed likely to happen. Birmingham have come up with the money and we lose probably our best player – it’s by no means a huge fee but Dave Jones will surely get a sizable chunk of money to re-invest – he does at least have an excellent track record with defenders.

Darren Purse has left, Roger Johnson’s terms are a mere formality meaning that Gabor Gyepes is the only central defender at the club. Matt Mills of Doncaster Rovers appears a likely replacement, but we’d need to spend all of the £2m for his signature. Nottingham Forest are also showing strong interest.

Good luck Roger, perhaps over-confident and even arrogant at times – there is no doubting his commitment, quality and potential – he could be an important player for Birmingham City.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Devastating. He has been a rock, irreplaceable, and for Brum to get him for 2m up front is a steal. We’ll probably never see the full 5m.

I really do think any £5m deal should have been up-front for Roger. Two million is not much to work with for finding a replacement.

i agree, ledley or Ross could be more easily replaced, but a solid centre back’s are hard to find, lets hope for another DJ scouting special!! good luck Roger!

  • bluebirdshroom says:

Kit comes out a day or so before the first friendly – poor marketing, virtually every other team has their kit out !

lol – is that all you care about? not the league at all? oh well – little brother syndrome I suppose. At least not all Swans fans share your views – that would be plain embarassing…
