Cardiff City needed extra time to break the deadlock against Coca-Cola League One outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Bluebirds dominated play from first to last, playing some excellent football in the middle third. However, as was the case on Saturday, they were unable to translate possession and good play into goalscoring opportunities.

It was a strong Cardiff side that started, Purse in for Loovens, Gunter for McNaughton and Whittingham for Ledley. The MacLean / Feeney partnership was given another opportunity but flopped. There was no shortage of effort but it was too easy for Brighton as high balls were cleared and the defence rarely turned.

Brighton were restricted to long ball tactics and long range efforts for most of the game, they barely had any ball 2nd half but still Cardiff, now with Matt Green up front, couldnt score. Stephen McPhail had a couple of long range shots, but none troubles Kuipers too much.

It took Green just moments to win his first, and Cardiff’s first, attacking header. He dropped off, and attack from deeper, winning the ball despite his slight, and young physique.

The winning goal game as the match looked to be heading for penalties. A Paul Parry corner saw ROGER JOHNSON rise majestically in the area and head home with power. The towering defender seemed to hover and held his pose in mid-air, a really good goal.

Good to get the win, and so we should have with a strong line-up. These occasions are tricky, but we never looked like conceding. Johnson grew in confidence, while Purse did well and McPhail was spraying passes around for fun and looking near his best again.

A final word on Turnbull, who had virtually nothing to do all game. The on-loan youngster looked slightly dodgy on his debut, and would have hoped for a better night tonight. His kicking was OK, he had no meaningful saves but repeatedly tried to contol back-passes with what looked like unadvisable ‘keep-up’ skills. On one occasion a tame Gunter back-pass was controlled out-of-play for a corner under no pressure. No need !
