Wigan Athletic are thought to be lining up a bid for experienced Cardiff City centre-back Darren Purse after releasing former Portsmouth favourite Arjan De Zeeuw.

Purse, attracted interest from Premiership clubs Wigan and Watford in January but re-affirmed his committment to the Bluebirds, however Wigan narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the season and are thought to be stepping up their interest in Purse despite the departure of boss Paul Jewell.

Whilst Cardiff would be happy to start the season with Purse, Loovens and Johnson – Dave Jones has admitted that every player has their price and Wigan’s offer, thought to be around £1.2m, could seriously tempt Cardiff who are about to embark on a major squad overhaul and could use extra funds.

Sheffield United, Watford, Charlton Athletic and Middlesbrough have all been linked with moves for Purse, who at 30 is just coming into his prime.

Purse has been a committed and dedicated servant to Cardiff and his influence has been impressive for Cardiff City. You know what you’re going to get from Pursey but if a bid materialises – Cardiff are likely to accept and Purse will have a difficult choice to make.
