Cardiff Captain Attracting Interest

Cardiff City are bracing themselves for bids for their captain and experienced centre-half Darren Purse with Charlton Athletic leading the chase for Purse’s signiture.

The interest follows the last 2 months in which Purse has lost his place in the Cardiff City side and been resigned to a bench role. Roger Johnson and Glenn Loovens have formed the defensive pairing which, along with the arrival of Kasper Schmeichel on loan from Manchester City, saw Cardiff leap up the table with a string of good results.

Now Purse, is the subject of interest from Charlton, Colchester United and Southampton and may decide to look elsewhere for first team action.

It would be disappointing to lose Darren to another team in the Championship. Any side with realistic hopes of a play-off place must have three proven centre-backs and we need that competition all over the pitch if we are to succeed. Purse has not been kept out for long and any injury/suspension to Loovens or Johnson would hand Purse another chance to re-gain a long-term starting position.

Charlton and Wigan showed interest at this time last year, but Purse remained a Bluebird. He would command a fee, but we are unlikely to get anyone in with the same pedigree and experience as Purse.

Colchester are after him what a signing that would be! Can’t see him joining though.

He may well know what put Chris Barker joining you guys too so looks even less likely. He’s got to stay unless we get £750k minimum.

    Yeah can’t see it happening.

We need Darren if we’re going to be serious about climbing the table – he’s an inspirational club captain and no club looking for promotion can depend upon only two central defenders. Certainly shouldn’t go for less than £1m.
