Cardiff Bid To Keep Schmeichel

Cardiff City have opened talks with Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson over extending young goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel’s stay at the club.

The Bluebirds are short of quality in the goalkeeping department, Ross Turnbull having returned to Middlesborough FC after some dodgy performances, and neither Michael Oakes or David Forde impressing sufficiently.

Schmeichel has had little chance to prove himself yet, coming into a misfiring side and conceding three last time out. However, Man City are likely to sanction an extension after Joe Hart grabbed the number one shirt at CoM Stadium, with Andreak Isaksson providing good cover.

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones would ‘love’ to keep the Danish keeper while the player himself is also keen on the extension, telling the SW Echo:

“I need games and Cardiff City have offered me the chance.”

“I`m excited to be here and I would be happy to stay longer.”

Schmeichel, barring injury, will be between the posts for Cardiff’s next game, a home match against Ipswich Town, and one that Dave Jones and his side will be absolutely desperate to win.

You have got a great keeper if you can keep him. I cannot see him getting back into the first team at city at the moment.
