Cardiff City have reportedly bid for English striker Nicky Maynard from Coca-Cola League One side Crewe Alexandra.

The pacy striker has scored 19 goals this season for the Railwayman, an impressive tally given his age, the youngster is just 20 and playing in his first full season. Maynard’s partnership with highly-rated Luke Varney has been important for Crewe but a mid-table finish was all the Alex could achieve this season.

It is not the first time City have been linked with Crewe Alexandra players: Varney himself, and defender Billy Jones have both been linked this season but this is the first report of a bid.

The bid has apparently been rejected but boss Dario Gradi refused to comment on any offers made for the player and maintained he expected that Maynard would be a Crewe player again next year:

I’m not getting involved in any speculation.’

‘I would think we might get enquiries for Varney but I’m not expecting Maynard to be going anywhere.’
