Cardiff Battered by County Six

Cardiff City’s pre-season took another turn for the worse after a disjointed defensive performance saw Stockport County put 6 (SIX) past the Bluebirds.

Cardiff themselves gor 4 goals, a neat Gavin Rae finish when through and a Trevor Sinclair arrow from 16 yards saw the Bluebirds in front. Later Steve MacLean was on hand to nod home a rebound and Peter Whittingham found an inch of space to scramble a 4th late on.

However, at the back – City were woeful. Two own goals, one from Rae after heading back past the onrushing Forde (there appeared little danger), another from Purse when he cut out a cross but only diverted it in from close range. A Purse header was spectacularly volleyed home from 20 yards, straight to the top corner.

A moment of pure comedy saw a clearance by Purse, hit a fellow defender yards away and rebound neatly for a County player tom tap home.

It was particularly worrying how County expoited a gap at left-back when Capaldi, who had a poor game, was out of position. County players had time to collect, turn and shoot without challenge and that cannot happen once the season starts for real.

A game out of the way then, and plenty to take on board. The defense was all wrong, looking slow, rusty and incapable of communication. That said, in attack we were sharp and caused problems. It was a good spectacle and good learning game for both sides.

Onwards and, hopefully, upwards…
