Cardiff: Bargain Hunt Budgeteers!

Cardiff City have a competitive side, capable of matching every side in the division and one who command plenty of respect from other sides.

However, looking at the side which started the last game (away at Barnsley) – there are some big names but no great expenditure. In fact the majority cost no initial outlay in bringing them to Ninian Park:

Free Transfers
GK Michael Oakes Wolverhampton Wanderers
LB Tony Capaldi Plymouth Argyle
RB Kevin McNaughton Aberdeen
RM Trevor Sinclair Manchester City
CM Stephen McPhail Barnsley FC
CM Gavin Rae Rangers
ST Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink Charlton Athletic
ST Robbie FowlerLiverpool FC

In addition, Cardiff had Joe Ledley (a home grown Cardiff boy) on the left wing and the two central defenders:

CB Glenn Loovens Feyenoord£250k
CB Roger Johnson Wycombe Wanderers £300k

The entire starting XI cost a cumulative £550k. They’s less than Darren Purse, Alan Lee and only just over half an Andy Campbell ! It’s also worth noting that this line-up is close to Dave Jones’ first choice XI, Darren Purse (£600k) and two free transfers (Scimeca and MacLean) would also be involved in the squad but for injury.

The substitutes were hardly expensive too with just 2 of them commanding a fee:

Turnbull (loan), Parry (£75k), Whittingham (£350k), Green (free), Gunter (youth product).

Dave Jones has made some astute signings in his tenure, while more recently Peter Ridsdale has been instrumental in bringing McPhail, Fowler and Hasselbaink to the club. We have worked on a tight budget for some time but are continuing to build and improve the squad.
