Cardiff City made 4 changes to the side beaten by Charlton, and they started brightly enough although the football was a little flat with few moments of quality or threats on goal. However City were dominating possession and got the first sights of goal through a Roger Johnson header cleared of the line, and a McPhail shot easily held by Gerken.

Cardiff continues to press, and Hasselbaink got through on goal only to see his low shot palmed onto the post by Gerken, it was a good move and a good effort from the recalled veteran.

Steve Thompson charged forward after a defensive mix-up and was brought down on the edge of the area, Cardiff’s well worked free kick saw a powerful Whittingham effort pushed to safety.

However, it looked to be a desperately familiar story as, on the stroke of half time, Colchester United took the lead with their first real effort.

Kevin McNaughton hesitated as a floated cross came in from the Cardiff right, John Jackson nipped in as the ball bounced and drove right footed past Schmeichel. It was a poor piece of defending and worrying for us to be behind, as against Hull City, after dominating the half.

A lively period ensued at the beginning of the second half, and Cardiff got the goal they needed early. 7 mins in, Parry did well and fed Hasselbaink whose low centre was bravely headed in at the near post by STEVE THOMPSON.

Moments later, Chris Gunter missed his challenge on the edge of the box and former Swansea City player Kevin McLeod went through on goal, his poor effort was blocked by Kasper. It was a glorious 1-on-1 chance and a real let-off for Cardiff.

It didn’t take long for another goal to come, and this time it was the team in Blue who deservedly took the lead. Parry’s deep cross found PETER WHITTINGHAM whose drive found the net via a deflection.

The best goal of the match then followed as Whittingham cleverly dummied and was picked out at the bye-line by Jimmy FH, Whitts crossed low and HASSELBAINK was there to sidefoot home.

The rout continued as Thommo played a dangerous ball into the area and Adam Virgo turned the ball into his own.

Hasselbaink should have had another from McNaughton cross that bounced invitingly just a few yards from goal, while Whittingham shot narrowly wide but the game was all done and dusted by then.

Kevin Lisbie saw a shot saved by Schmeichel but the job was done and a valuable home win that fairly reflected our domination for once.
