Cardiff 1-1 Palace (Match Report)

Cardiff City suffered more home heartache as a poor Crystal Palace side left Ninian Park with a point leaving the home players and support frustrated and deflated.

Cardiff took the lead when woeful defending allowed Darren Purse to steal in unmarked and head home, the Bluebirds forged another excellent chance moments later but Joe Ledley choose to cross rather than shoot but his pass evaded Hasselbaink.

Crystal Palace equalised shortly before half time with a dubious penalty. Capaldi had not looked comfortable all half but was adjudged to have blocked Palace midfielder Tom Soares – though there was little he could have done as Soares ran into him. However, Capaldi and various City players were incensed as the incident had occurred outside the penalty area. It was only marginally outside, but the referee (poor all night incidentally)Lee Mason had no hesitation and Watson coolly slotted home.

The second half saw the game deteriorate, Hasselbaink saw a shot saved while we also created confusion in the Palace area with several crosses. Ifill also saw a shot saved but in truth there were few real chances and both sides looked nervous and lacked quality.

McPhail managed to get more involved than recent weeks but couldn’t break the deadlock while Joe Ledley was my pick of the Cardiff players. Capaldi aside, the defence looked fairly settled and McNaughton put in an energetic performance down the right.

One all was not enough, its wins we desperately need. Palace rarely threatened and were lucky with their goal, but we failed to create the chances or put them away – and paid the price. Whatever we’re being told – lessons are not being learnt.
