Cardiff City were rolled over by a professional Charlton Athletic outfit who barely got out of second gear and looked under little threat from a woeful Cardiff City performance.

The first meaningful attempt on goal game in the 25th minute after a lacklustre start from both sides. His shot on the turn was well wide. Cardiff’s first effort was in the 33rd minute when Weaver held a tame effort. Ironically it was from that move the opener came.

Weaver’s lost punt downfield won a corner, the header was won (by Loovens I think) but the second header away was weak and fell to Matty Holland to drill low through a crowd of players, wrong-footing Schmeichel and nestling in the left corner. A really poor goal to concede.

The 44th minute saw Cardiff’s own number 44 Chris Gunter screw a shot wide from the edge of the area.

Capaldi made way for Whittingham after a torrid first half but nothing changed for Cardiff. Darren Purse saw a 40 yard rocket fly not too far over – but describing that as a chance makes you realise how poor we were.

Midway through the second half, Cardiff City had a decent shout for a penalty when Chinese midfielder Zheng Zhi tried to control a bouncing ball and the ball looked to have caught his hand.

Whittingham actually went closest for Cardiff with a curler from 25 yards, a good effort that had Weaver struggling but missed the post by a foot. Charlton Athletic decided they might need another goal – so went and got it – such was our lack of resolve.

Purse slipped inside the area under little pressure, he could have been penalised for handball but he waited for Darren Ambrose to nip in before bringing him down – Andy Reid dispatched the penalty with ease, as Charlton did to us.

And that was pretty much it, Hasselbaink came on but was anonymous except for shouting at a few fellow players for not being good enough – hardly inspirrational leadership.

Charlton’s Sodje was absolutely immense at the back for the Addicks, he wasn’t threatened too much but he headed, cleared and intercepted time and again to excellent effect.

The final whistle was greeted by predictable boos, a worse performance than losing to Stoke, Coventry and the draw with Scunthorpe Utd. Turned a corner? Not yet it seems.
