Cardiff came up against a Tottenham Hotspur side looking very strong on paper including the likes of Danny Murphy, Steed Malbranque and Jermaine Defoe. City themselves were boosted as Kevin McNaughton and Willo Flood were fit to play.

The game started brightly enough with both teams looking to play neat, rapid passes but both sides were guilty of losing possession too easily as passes went astray on the greasy surface.

On 14 minutes, Cardiff created the first clear opportunity when Chopra read a Lee backheader and poked the ball past Robinson but the ball trickled wide with Michael Dawson covering. Just minutes later a lovely, patient passing move saw McPhail cross to an unmarked Chopra but his header went wide.

Cardiff were shading possession and chances but didnt have it all their own way. A Berbatov snapshot from the edge of the area was well caught by Alexander after a deflection off Darren Purse but the shot sparked a lengthy period of Cardiff pressure culminating in Flood sliding a great ball through to Chopra but the striker opted to cross rather than shot and his pass flew inches above Thompson’s head.

Immediately after the restart, Spurs created their best chance when a brilliant through ball caught the City defence napping but Jermaine Defoe shot uncharacteristically wide from the edge of the area.

On the hour mark, good play by Willo Flood set up Riccy Scimec to shoot from 15 yards but he went near post and the ball went wide when he really should have forced England International Paul Robinson into a save.

Neil Alexander got down quickly to dent Defoe during a spell where Tottenham dominated possession and Cardiff couldnt clear their lines but the rest of the game faded as bith sides lacked the impetus to break the other down.

FT: Cardiff 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

A fair result in the end and whilst Cardiff had the better of play and chances, they were unable to make it count against a solid but disappointing Spurs side. Yet another draw for City and again goalless, they now face an enjoyable but tricky trip to White Hart Lane for the replay.

Glen Loovens was voted man of the match, who alongside Darren Purse, kept a very dangerous strikeforce virtually out of the game in an excellent defensive display. Joe Ledley and Willo Flood were industrious on the flanks but lacked the creative spark to open up the visitors. Cardiff, however, can be proud of their performance and look forward to the next round with renewed optimism.
