Cardiff City utility man Darcy Blake was one of the young Welsh heroes last night as the U21s came so close to a memorable upset in losing 5-4 to England U21s on aggregate.

Trailing 3-2 from the first leg, the Welsh task seemed impossible when Tom Huddlestone’s free-kick gave England a lead on the night. However a truly magnificent strike from former Bluebird Aaron Ramsey pulled them level before the Arsenal youngster turned provider for Simon Church to dink a second goal.

The Welsh played with renewed belief but a cruel own goal deflected off Sam Vokes to hand England the lead. Wales continued to push and were given further incentive after Huddlestone was dismissed to give Wales a man advantage. Blake was booked for a foul on Manchester United youngster Frazier Campbell before Sam Vokes unluckily saw his turn and shot smack off the base of the post.

Wales U21s were so unlucky, but despite winning their group will not travel to the finals in Sweden.

This was the last U21s game for Aaron Ramsey, and he signed off in style with a breathtaking man-of-the-match display including a tremendous goal. He will now feature in the senior squad and has plenty to offer – as Cardiff City fans already know.

Any CCFC fans who haven’t seen Ramsey’s goal – please look – but it will make you sad at what we’re missing this season….phenomenal.
