Cardiff City can now look forward unabated to a much awaited visit to Wembley for an unlikely FA Cup semi-final date with Barnsley.
The game is potentially the biggest since the Cup triumph back in 1927 – forever a famous year in Cardiff City’s history. A fantastic chance to progress to the fianl of the celebrated competition.
The demand for tickets has been high sparking comparisons with the play-off final back in 2003 that saw The Bluebirds defeat QPR at the Millenium Stadium and win promotion to the Championship.
For that game, well about 5 seconds of it, Andy Campbell will long be remembered in Cardiff fan’s hearts. A £1m signing by Lennie Lawrence, Andy Campbell was little short of a disaster after signing permanently for Cardiff. He lost his way completely and was often seen ambling aimlessley around pitches.
Campbell never succeeded in replacing Robert Earnshaw but he did score that crucial play-off final winner. Often criticised, regularly booed the hapless Campbell was not a welcome sight at the Millenium as he replaced Earnshaw in extra time. However, Gareth Whalley’s dink over the top found space and Campbell advanced to loop a sublime shot over Chris Day and write his name into the CCFC history books.
Campbell now plies his trade in the football conference with Halifax Town but few Cardiff fans have forgotten the name or that grinning toothy face.
Now Cardiff City players have the chance to forever write their names into the hearts of Bluebirds fans. Will we have another Andy Campbell – who would it be….?
A Stephen McPhail scorcher from 30 yards? Tony Capaldi dancing down the left flank, beating two before cutting inside anther and launching a right foot piledriver into the corner? Perhaps Steve Thompson producing some Cristiano Ronaldo-esque stepovers before rounding the keeper?
I’ll be happy with a win. Any which way or how.

When I read the headline I thought the article was going to be about what a huge and costly [in terms of goals not scored and free kicks given away] disappointment Steve Thompson has been .. his miss last night – someone who misses from that distance with only the keeper to beat is simply not a good forward – must surely signal the end of his time with us – when is his contract up? And for Sunday can Mr.Jones please tell midfielders who actually get anywhere near the goal to bloody shoot and not fiddle about with those extra make sure’ touches that allow defenders to snuff out attacks?

its just shocking to read that some people forgott about andy campbell, he is a hero. but we let go to many young stars, fleetwood, could of been something, just never got given the chance, same as ferreti, DJ is to reliant on the big names even if they dont score, you keep saying all this about steve thomo being usless, what about jfh, he doesnt score, but hes not usless, robbie fowler, he looked like a good goal scorer for the championship but got hit by injury, Roger Johnson is our centre back, and has scored 7 goals hes like our 5th top scoring, something needs to be done
I think Hasselbaink creates space better and brings others into the game. Thommos was too reliant on just flicking on and letting Chopra’s pace make the difference
hasselbaink doesnt move, he expects the ball to go to his feet, thomo moves around, draws in defenders, leaving gaps in the defence, when he signed for cardiff, he said he is not a goal scorer, look can you remeber Peter Thorne, he was a hold up man for earny and a 15goal a season man, now he plays for bradford, hes cheap, we should look at players like him, arron mclean, and them, they could be hidden jems, they can finish, and we have the midfield who can provid
Peter Thorne was an incredibly intelligent footballer but played in lower leagues with City. Many at NP criticised him, i heard him called a ‘parks player’. We’ve signed more than our fair share of duds in recent years, Nsungu, Glombard, Byrne, Feeney etc
true, dave jones has only found 1 gem out of all them signings upfront, and then after one season, he was sold on. derby have just been relegated to the championship which will mean all their high waged players and big money names, will have to go to keep a steady income into their club, so if we have a bit of money maybe we would be seeing earnshaw, or chopra at cardiff maybee even the likes of doyle or leroy lita
